client server - Historical connection between CVS and SVN -
at point, younger person learned there connection between cvs , more recent version control system svn. months , years later, tried rediscover connection, , came nothing. thought maybe making in past. searching little harder, found info stating subversion (svn) started former cvs developers. what's story on this? why not update cvs? why did cvs devs start on svn?

in 2000, collabnet, inc. (http://www.collab.net) began seeking developers write replacement cvs. collabnet offered[3] collaboration software suite called collabnet enterprise edition (cee), of 1 component version control. although cee used cvs initial version control system, cvs's limitations obvious beginning, , collabnet knew have find better. unfortunately, cvs had become de facto standard in open source world largely because there wasn't better, @ least not under free license. collabnet determined write new version control system scratch, retaining basic ideas of cvs, without bugs , misfeatures.
